People, as Aristotle said, are political animals. Mainstream political philosophy, however, has largely neglected humankind's animal nature as beings who are naturally equipped, and inclined, to reason and work together, create social bonds and care for their young. Stephen Clark, grounded in biological analysis and traditional ethics, probes into areas ignored in mainstream political theory and argues for the significance of social bonds which bypass or transcend state authority. Understanding the ties that bind us reveals how enormously capable we are in achieving civil order as a specie

People, as Aristotle said, are political animals. That we are animals means that we share with other social mammals a concern for children, and family relationships, that are too often neglected in mainstream political philosophy. That we are political means that we seek to govern ourselves through consultation and mutual adjustment. This text argues for the significance of social bonds that ignore or transcend state authority. As political animals we have, in effect, domesticated ourselves. Understanding both the pros and cons of domesticity, we have a better chance of peace, with each other and the living world. Being and living like the animals we are is a more congenial prospect than is usually, and ignorantly supposed.

A chief aim of this resource is to rekindle interest in seeing health care not solely as a set of practices so problematic as to require ethical analysis by philosophers and other scholars, but as a field whose scrutiny is richly rewarding for the traditional concerns of philosophy. This book dramatically expands the repertoire of resources for students and teachers of bioethics. It includes selections from the best thinkers in bioethics and the ethics and philosophy of care.

The ethical theories employed in health care today assume, in the main, a modern Western philosophical framework. Yet the diversity of cultural and religious assumptions regarding human nature, health and illness, life and death, and the status of the individual suggest that a cross-cultural study of health care ethics is needed. A Cross-Cultural Dialogue on Health Care Ethics provides this study. It shows that ethical questions can be resolved by examining the ethical principles present in each culture, critically assessing each value, and identifying common values found within all traditions, It encourages the development of global awareness and sensitivity to and respect for the diversity of peoples and their values and will advance understanding as well as help to foster a greater balance and a fuller truth in consideration of the human condition and what makes for health and wholeness.
